Replace Missing Teeth with Dental Implants in Abbotsford.
Dental Implants in Abbotsford
Dental implants are now the most common treatment for missing teeth. They are the least invasive procedure because you don’t have to sacrifice adjacent teeth!
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth implanted into the jaw to replace missing teeth. Today’s dental implants are durable and feel and function like natural teeth. They are also crafted to shape and enhance your smile even more than the teeth they replace!
Dental Implants Can Achieve Several Benefits:
- Replace a missing tooth without affecting adjacent teeth
- Maintain proper alignment by preventing teeth from moving into the gap left by a missing tooth
- Support proper biting, chewing and speech
- Restore confidence with a beautiful, healthy-looking smile
- Support a bridge or denture for optimal comfort and function
What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?
Besides pain, sedation dentistry boasts several more benefits.
For one, a sedated patient is easier and safer to treat than one who moves around throughout the procedure. In this way, sedation dentistry minimizes the amount of time your Abbotsford dentist visit will take. Medora Dental Care patients also experience very few side effects of sedation and can choose from sedatives in pill form to avoid ones requiring needles.
The Procedure
The placement of a dental implant involves a series of visits, starting with an initial consultation where necessary x-rays are taken and the patient is confirmed to be a good candidate for a dental implant.
The Procedure
The placement of a dental implant involves a series of visits, starting with an initial consultation where necessary x-rays are taken and the patient is confirmed to be a good candidate for a dental implant. This would mean examining the mouth and x-rays to evaluate the condition of the bone and other teeth. You may also be asked to have a CT scan done to confirm the bone thickness of the jaws as well as define the shape of the bony contours. The actual surgical procedure begins with the preparation of the bone site for placement of the implant. The implant is a titanium metal fixture which serves as an anchor placed into the jawbone. There it will serve as an artificial root for the permanent crown to later be installed.
Once in place, the implant usually takes three to six months to fully heal and integrate with the surrounding jawbone. This gives the surrounding bone enough time to form a strong bond with the implant. A temporary crown or temporary denture may be placed over the implant during the waiting time. Impressions of the teeth and gums are taken and then used to create a permanent crown which is fitted to the dental implant once it has healed. It is possible to do a single or multiple teeth depending on what may be needed. The entire procedure usually takes about six to eight months. The success rate for implants is now very high and many patients are finding it the best option for tooth replacement.
What Kinds of Sedatives Are Available?
Here at Medora Dental, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Different levels of sedation can be utilized depending on individual needs.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is commonly used as a mild sedative. It is administered through a nose hood throughout the entire procedure. The sedative elevates the patient’s mood and can elicit a sense of well-being. Nitrous oxide relieves anxiety and reduces pain during dental procedures for patients who fear to go to the dentist. Some numbness and tingling can be felt from the sedative. It has very few side effects and has been used safely in dental practices for over 100 years.
For those who want something a little stronger than laughing gas as they undergo a root canal or tooth extraction at Medora Dental Care, we offer oral conscious sedation options. This relaxation method involves taking a pill meant to induce moderate sedation. The medication we use to sedate patients is a benzodiazepine. These drugs ease anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms, and are only effective for a specific period of time. Using these medications for sedation dentistry doesn’t put the patient to sleep, but instead makes them feel groggy. Many Medora Dental Care patients say they don’t remember any pain, sounds, or smells from the procedure. Pill sedation allows you to be awake during your time in the dentist’s chair, but unaware of your procedure.
Rather than nitrous oxide or pill sedation, some patients opt for IV sedation. Although many people confuse IV sedation with general anesthesia, they are not interchangeable. General anesthesia puts patients to sleep, where IV sedation puts patients in a semi-sleep-like state. They cannot remember undergoing the procedure, nor do they recall any sounds, smells, or tastes either. However, IV sedation at Medora Dental Care does involve needles. If you have anxiety surrounding needles, pill sedation is likely your best bet.
