Dental Bridges
Solutions from Our Abbotsford Clinic
If you’re like many Canadians, you likely have a missing tooth or several teeth affected by decay. With implants, crowns, and dental bridges, Abbotsford patients of Medora Dental Care have a number of options to restore the appearance and function of their natural teeth. But, did you know there are actually several styles of dental bridges? Our Abbotsford dental clinic can recommend a dental bridge style that will look great and offer the best treatment for your specific condition.

Let’s Take a Look at
The Four Main Types of Dental Bridges
03. Bridges supported by implants
Dental implants are essentially titanium replacements for missing teeth roots. Instead of abutments, your bridge can be placed directly atop the dental implants. This style is becoming increasingly popular as it allows a more natural feel, function, and appearance.
01. Classic dental bridges
This style uses abutment crowns cemented onto two healthy teeth in order to support the pontics (false teeth) in place of one or more missing teeth.
02. Maryland bridges
Maryland bridges are essentially traditional bridges the bridge is supported by a metal framework cemented to the backside of two adjoining healthy teeth.
04. Cantilevers
Somewhat similar to traditional dental bridges, cantilever bridges can be used to replace a missing tooth. A cantilever bridge is supported by a single abutment crown on just one side of the replacement tooth. This style of bridge should be used sparingly as the minimal support can lead to loose crowns and fractured teeth — results that are not always in line with a long-term dental solution, as bridges should be.
Smile with Confidence
Dental crowns have a similar purpose as dentures (to fortify or replace a tooth), but unlike dentures, dental crowns and bridges are only removable with the assistance of a dentist. One explanation for the popularity of dental crowns in Abbotsford is that they can create a highly realistic substitute for natural teeth, which means a more attractive smile, too!
Restorative Benefits of Dental Crowns
- Protecting weak, damaged teeth
- Replacing a large filling
- Attaching a bridge
- Covering a discoloured tooth
- Covering a misshapen tooth
- Protecting a tooth after a root canal
How Do Dental Crowns Function?
Crowns are used to “cap” or encapsulate a tooth that has been damaged or received some form of restorative treatment such as root canal therapy. But, a crown can also act as a form of cosmetic prosthesis when it is used to cover a tooth that does not respond to whitening or a tooth with a shape that is unattractive.
With proper care, dental crowns can last the entirety of your life. Although, like natural teeth, dental crowns can fall out or become loose under certain circumstances such as trauma or periodontal disease. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, you should brush and floss twice a day, or at a schedule determined by your dentist.

The Procedure
The placement of a dental implant involves a series of visits, starting with an initial consultation where necessary x-rays are taken and the patient is confirmed to be a good candidate for a dental implant.
The Procedure
The placement of a dental implant involves a series of visits, starting with an initial consultation where necessary x-rays are taken and the patient is confirmed to be a good candidate for a dental implant. This would mean examining the mouth and x-rays to evaluate the condition of the bone and other teeth. You may also be asked to have a CT scan done to confirm the bone thickness of the jaws as well as define the shape of the bony contours. The actual surgical procedure begins with the preparation of the bone site for placement of the implant. The implant is a titanium metal fixture which serves as an anchor placed into the jawbone. There it will serve as an artificial root for the permanent crown to later be installed.
Once in place, the implant usually takes three to six months to fully heal and integrate with the surrounding jawbone. This gives the surrounding bone enough time to form a strong bond with the implant. A temporary crown or temporary denture may be placed over the implant during the waiting time. Impressions of the teeth and gums are taken and then used to create a permanent crown which is fitted to the dental implant once it has healed. It is possible to do a single or multiple teeth depending on what may be needed. The entire procedure usually takes about six to eight months. The success rate for implants is now very high and many patients are finding it the best option for tooth replacement.
Sometimes fillings just aren’t enough to restore your chipped or cracked teeth to their original appearance. In these cases, dental crowns and bridges are a viable solution. Medora Dental Care uses crowns to cover misshapen teeth, reinforce weak teeth, or protect a tooth after a root canal. Bridges, on the other hand, are used to replace missing teeth with prosthetics to make them look as real as possible. On some occasions, bridges are used in conjunction with dental implants for the best results. Regardless of whether you need a dental bridge or porcelain crowns, the team at our Abbotsford dental office will use these techniques to give you the smile you deserve.
Veneers are another popular cosmetic dentistry option in Abbotsford, BC. Veneers are thin enamel-like sheets meant to cover the surface of the tooth. These hide unsightly discoloration and misshapen teeth while blending in seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. At Medora Dental Care, we always take special care to ensure your veneers match your existing teeth. If veneers are too much of a commitment, we also use inlays and onlays to restore your teeth. We utilize these to replace old fillings, cover chips and maintain the structure of your tooth.
No one wants to wear braces, but everyone wants straight teeth. With Invisalign®, you may be able to get them perfectly aligned teeth you always wanted without the confidence zap often accompanying braces. Invisalign® from Medora Dental Care is virtually invisible and can easily be removed to eat or drink. Plus, they’re super comfortable to wear as they straighten your teeth. In addition to Invisalign®, we also offer Six Month Smiles®. This option gives you all the benefits of traditional braces without feeling insecure about metal on your teeth. Six Month Smiles® is a clear braces treatment to give you straighter teeth in as little as six months.
